Lift Safety

Vermont’s ski areas are dedicated to keeping you safe on the slopes, and that starts with ski lift safety. Knowing how to load, ride, and unload a lift properly is your responsibility and an important part of having a great day on the mountain.

Follow these tips to ensure a smooth and safe lift experience:

  1. Know Before You Go
    • Familiarize yourself with the type of lift you’ll be riding.
    • Watch others load the lift to see how it’s done.
    • Don’t hesitate to ask for help—staff are there to assist you.
  2. Prepare to Load
    • Remove backpacks and secure any loose items.
    • Take pole straps off your wrists.
  3. Loading the Lift
    • Wait for the chair to pass, then step forward to the “load here” line.
    • Look over your shoulder to watch the chair as it approaches.
    • Sit all the way back in the chair with your back against the seat rest.
  4. Using the Restraint Bar
    • In Vermont, lowering the restraint bar is the law.
    • Once everyone is seated, ask if everyone is ready before slowly lowering the bar.
    • Adults should assist children in lowering the bar. If you can’t reach it, ask for help—never attempt it if you’re unsure.
  5. While Riding the Lift
    • Stay aware of your surroundings.
    • If you drop something, let it fall—ski patrol can help retrieve it later.
    • No horseplay! Keep it calm and focused.
  6. Unloading the Lift
    • Watch for signs instructing you to raise the restraint bar as you near the top. Timing is important!
    • Raise the bar in advance and prepare to exit smoothly.
    • Exit quickly and move out of the unloading area to allow others to disembark safely.
